The "C" Word – Conversations that Shaped Our Industry and Association in 2025

03rd December 2025
By Simon Tengende, CEO – AWCI Australia
In every industry, there are words that become anchors—shared reference points that guide how we think, how we act, and how we build.

CEO Reflections: “The conversation is the relationship.”

In every industry, there are words that become anchors—shared reference points that guide how we think, how we act, and how we build. At AWCI Australia, one of those anchor points has become what we jokingly, yet seriously, call “The C Words.” Not the one people flinch at—but the six that define who we are becoming as a national association: Culture, Collaboration, Capability, Compliance, Confidence, and Commitment.

These words are not slogans. They are not marketing lines. They are the themes that sit underneath everything we are building—our programs, our advocacy, our standards, our events, and our relationships. They are the conversations that shape how we show up for each other and for the industry.

And behind all of it is a simple motto I have been repeating often:

“The conversation is the relationship.”

How we speak to each other and how we engage with members, partners, government, and the industry deeply influences the trust we build and the impact we can deliver. The work of transforming an industry takes time, but progress becomes real the moment we start talking honestly, regularly, and with purpose.

Below, I want to share what each of these “C Words” means for us—as an association, as a team, and as a national industry preparing for a stronger future.

Culture: The Foundation We Build On

Culture is not something written on a poster. It’s what people feel when they walk into the room. It’s the tone of an email, the behaviour in a meeting, the way we handle pressure, the way we celebrate wins, and the way we support each other.

At AWCI Australia, culture is our first “C Word” because it shapes everything else.
We are building a culture that is:

  • national in scope
  • supportive in behaviour
  • ambitious in vision
  • practical in execution
  • consistent in values

A healthy culture reduces friction, increases clarity, and helps everyone perform at their best. When culture is strong, momentum becomes natural. When culture is fractured, even small tasks feel heavy.

This is why our internal behaviours—communication, accountability, transparency, and respect—matter just as much as our external programs. Culture is the soil in which everything grows.

Collaboration: Because We Go Further Together

Our industry is made up of state differences, regional nuances, and technical variations, but our challenges are shared. Collaboration is the moment when those shared challenges become shared solutions.

As a national organisation, collaboration is not optional—it’s an essential operating principle.

We collaborate internally as a team.
We collaborate across states through State Advisory committee’s and directly with members
We collaborate with manufacturers, suppliers, TAFEs, government, and partners.
We collaborate with technical specialists and training experts.
We collaborate with each other, as colleagues, professionals, and people.

The power of AWCI Australia lies in our ability to bring people and ideas together—to make collective progress, not isolated effort. Every conversation we start is a doorway to collaboration.

And again, the conversation is the relationship—partnerships grow when people keep talking.

Capability: Lifting the Standard of the Industry

One of the clearest messages from contractors, builders, apprentices, and industry leaders is that capability must increase across the sector. Whether through training, CPD, RTO expansion, technical guidance, or business skills—contractors want support, structure, tools, and clarity.

Our role is to lead capability uplift across the entire value chain:

  • Training through the RTO
  • CPD pathways
  • Business mentoring and financial literacy
  • Technical guidelines and TKB (Technical Knowledge base) growth
  • Blue Card development for fire systems
  • Clear communication on standards and compliance
  • Practical resources that help contractors run better businesses.

Capability empowers people. It stabilises businesses. It protects consumers. And ultimately, it strengthens the reputation of the whole industry.

This is why capability is central to our national strategy. When we build capability, we build careers, opportunities, and confidence.

Compliance: Clarity, Safety, Standards, and Professionalism

Compliance is often seen as a burden, but in reality, it is a safeguard—protecting contractors, clients, and communities.

As fire-related tragedies continue to capture global attention, the responsibility placed on our trade has never been higher. Compliance is not only technical—it is moral.

Our role as AWCI Australia is to:

  • lead compliance education
  • build clear pathways to competency.
  • provide guidance on systems, contracts, and standards.
  • support contractors with independent inspection options
  • advocate for mandatory training and accountability

The upcoming Blue Card Program is a major step forward. It brings credibility, structure, and assurance to one of the industry’s most critical risk areas: fire-rated wall systems.

Compliance is not a checkbox—it is a commitment to quality, safety, and professionalism. It protects the industry and the public. It is part of who we are.

Confidence: Creating Stability Through Clarity and Momentum

Confidence is not generated through slogans—it is earned through clarity, consistency, and delivery.

Every time we communicate clearly, deliver on time, or provide a resource that genuinely helps a member, we build confidence in the association.
Every time we run a program that is structured and professional, we build confidence in our industry.
Every time we move from intention to action, confidence grows.

Confidence affects everything:

  • how members engage
  • how government listens
  • how partners invest
  • how new members join
  • how the industry perceives us

Our role is to create stability in a volatile environment. The more clarity and leadership we provide, the more confidence the industry has in us—and in itself.

Commitment: The Difference Between Talking and Doing

Commitment is the final “C Word,” because it is the bridge between conversation and execution.

Every team member, every partner, every volunteer, every board member, and every contractor who believes in what we are building contributes to our momentum.

Commitment is visible through:

  • consistent delivery
  • ownership of tasks
  • professionalism
  • follow-through
  • teamwork
  • pride in the work we do

We are committed to a national organisation that stands up for the industry. We are committed to lifting standards, improving capability, and strengthening compliance. We are committed to being the association the industry deserves.

The Through-Line: The Conversation Is the Relationship

These six “C Words” matter—but none of them exist without conversation.
The conversation is where clarity happens.
The conversation is where trust begins.
The conversation is where problems are solved.
The conversation is where relationships grow.
The conversation is the relationship.

Our ability to listen, to speak openly, to challenge ideas respectfully, and to keep dialogue flowing is what will drive our association forward.

These conversations—about culture, collaboration, capability, compliance, confidence, and commitment—are shaping who we are becoming as AWCI Australia.

They shape our work.
They shape our relationships.
They shape our future.

And they remind us that the conversation is the relationship.
