The "F" Word - Foundation
12th November 2025
By Simon Tegende, AWCI Australia
At AWCI Australia, we often talk about the future — where the industry is going, how we adapt to change, and what it takes to lead from the front. But before we can talk about the future, we have to start with the F word that truly matters: Foundations.
Every building, every wall, and every ceiling begins with a foundation. It’s the same with organisations and industries. Strong foundations don’t just appear — they are built deliberately, layer by layer, through commitment, shared vision, and the ability to work together through challenges.
Over the past year, AWCI Australia has been working hard to strengthen our foundations — not only within the organisation, but across the broader wall and ceiling industry. These foundations underpin everything we do — from supporting apprentices and members to developing national programs that raise standards and create pride in the trade.
1. Building on Purpose
Our foundation starts with purpose. For AWCI Australia, that purpose is clear: to support, represent, and elevate our members and industry so that wall and ceiling professionals are recognised for the skilled tradespeople they are.
A strong foundation of purpose ensures that every initiative we pursue — whether it’s advocacy, training, communications, or technical guidance — aligns with something bigger than day-to-day operations. Purpose reminds us that our work isn’t just about running a membership organisation; it’s about shaping the future of an entire trade.
2. Strengthening the Pillars
Every solid foundation rests on its pillars. For AWCI Australia, these are:
• Advocacy and Regulation – ensuring our members’ voices are heard in government and regulatory discussions.
• Training and Capability – building a future workforce with the skills to succeed.
• Membership and Industry Engagement – connecting professionals through community and collaboration.
• Sustainability and Growth – creating a financially stable and forward-thinking association.
Each pillar supports the others. If one weakens, the structure wobbles. That’s why we’re realigning our strategies and resources to ensure every part of the organisation — from technical committees to marketing, RTO operations, and state coordination — is contributing to the same strong base.
3. Foundations of Leadership
Foundations aren’t built by structures — they’re built by people. And leadership is the cornerstone.
As a Board and executive team, we’ve been intentional about building leadership that is both living and learning. Leadership at AWCI Australia isn’t about titles or roles; it’s about behaviour, example, and follow-through.
We’ve adopted frameworks such as the Living Leadership (CCD Praxis) Model, which encourages leaders at every level to demonstrate Clarity, Courage, and Discipline. These aren’t abstract values — they are daily practices that turn ideas into impact.
When we, as a Board and team, model the behaviours we expect from our members — integrity, accountability, collaboration — we strengthen the trust and credibility that our foundations rely on.
4. Foundations in Member Value
Our members are the reason we exist. That’s why the foundation of member value is so critical.
Over the past year, we’ve seen steady growth in membership across all categories — including apprentices — which tells us that our renewed focus on delivering value is resonating. From technical updates and standards support to national recognition through awards and programs, members are engaging more deeply and seeing the benefits of being part of a strong collective.
But true value doesn’t come just from services — it comes from belonging. A solid foundation of community means our members know that when they face challenges — whether regulatory, technical, or commercial — they have a national body standing beside them.
5. Foundations for the Future
Looking forward, our foundation work is setting the stage for growth and innovation. Programs like the Independent Inspections Framework and the Blue Card Initiative are examples of how we are turning vision into structure.
These initiatives will give our industry a credible, respected platform for compliance, quality assurance, and recognition. Together, they represent the next evolution of AWCI Australia — an organisation that not only advocates for high standards but actively builds the systems to support them.
Imagine an industry where every builder, contractor, and consumer knows that a wall and ceiling professional endorsed by AWCI Australia meets a verified standard of skill, compliance, and professionalism. That is the future we are laying the foundation for right now.
6. Staying Grounded
Of course, even the strongest foundation needs maintenance. We need to stay humble, listen to our members, and remain agile in responding to the industry’s changing landscape.
We are operating in a time of uncertainty — with economic pressures, labour shortages, and shifting regulations — but solid foundations give us stability. They allow us to face change with confidence rather than fear.
That’s why as we move toward 2026, our focus isn’t on chasing trends but on reinforcing what matters most: a strong membership base, credible leadership, trusted partnerships, and a future-ready workforce.
7. The Human Foundation
Behind every strong structure are people — apprentices, tradespeople, contractors, manufacturers, and educators — all doing their part. That’s our true foundation.
When we invest in people, we’re investing in everything that follows: quality, innovation, collaboration, and pride.
So, as we continue to build, let’s remember that foundations aren’t glamorous — they’re essential. They hold everything else up.
The F Word: Foundations is a reminder that before we reach higher, we must dig deeper. Our strength lies not in the noise of our activity but in the quiet certainty of what we stand on — our shared purpose, our collective leadership, and our unwavering belief that when our foundations are strong, our future is unshakeable.
