The "E" Word – Events

15th October 2025
By Simon Tengende, CEO – AWCI Australia

In every industry, there are rhythms that define the heartbeat of the profession — the cycles of work, the rush of deadlines, the pride of craftsmanship, and the satisfaction of delivering something tangible and lasting. For the wall and ceiling industry, that rhythm is powered not only by the tools we wield and the standards we uphold, but also by the moments we come together — to connect, learn, compete, and celebrate.
Those moments are what we call events — the lifeblood of our association and, indeed, of our entire industry.

The Power and Purpose of Events
Events are far more than dates on a calendar or line items in a budget. They are living expressions of who we are as a professional community. They showcase our collective identity, our progress, our shared challenges, and our collective victories.
For an association like AWCI Australia, events are the heartbeat that keeps the organisation connected to its members. They are the spaces where ideas are born, relationships are strengthened, and innovations are shared. They provide the fertile ground on which partnerships grow, apprentices are inspired, and leaders emerge.
From the Apprentice Challenge that showcases the next generation of tradespeople, to the Awards Night that honours excellence, to industry nights, golf days, conferences, and Christmas celebrations — every event represents a chapter in the story of our industry’s growth and evolution.
But more than that, events give meaning to membership. They are tangible expressions of value — opportunities for members to see, feel, and experience the association’s mission in action.

Why Events Matter — The Why Behind the “E Word”
At its core, AWCI’s event program exists for three fundamental reasons:

  1. Connection – Bringing people together across businesses, states, and specialties creates shared understanding and trust — the foundation of any strong industry.
  2. Collaboration – Events break down silos, giving members a platform to collaborate, share best practices, and learn from one another.
  3. Celebration – Recognising achievements, milestones, and excellence builds pride, motivates performance, and inspires the next generation to aim higher.

When members attend, sponsor, or simply show up, they are participating in the strengthening of the industry’s fabric.

The Lifeblood of Associations
Associations exist to serve, connect, and represent their members — and events are the most visible and powerful expression of that mission. They bring members together in person, creating energy and momentum that no newsletter, online portal, or social post can replicate.
Events are the lifeblood of an association because they create community. They convert abstract membership into tangible belonging. They give members a voice and a presence. They enable learning, networking, and visibility — benefits that go far beyond the day itself.
For AWCI Australia, events are also a cornerstone of financial sustainability. Ticket sales, sponsorships, and partnerships enable the association to reinvest in advocacy, education, and member services. Each event helps fund the very initiatives that protect and advance the industry — from licensing reform to training development, from compliance support to national standards work.
That’s why supporting events — through attendance, sponsorship, and engagement — is not only about having a good time; it’s about investing in your own industry.

Events as Industry Education and Market Intelligence
Another often-overlooked value of events is their role as informal but powerful platforms for education and market insight.
When members attend manufacturer familiarisation sessions, product demonstrations, or factory tours, they gain firsthand exposure to new technologies, materials, and innovations. These sessions give members a competitive edge, allowing them to understand where the industry is heading — whether that’s in the direction of sustainability, prefabrication, automation, or new fire-rated systems.
Through industry nights and conferences, members have access to expert speakers, technical updates, and regulatory briefings. These events serve as real-time knowledge exchanges that no online video or manual can replicate. You hear it from the source, ask questions, and engage directly.
That’s why AWCI Australia continues to build events that blend networking with learning — because one without the other is incomplete.

A Place to Build Relationships and Test Ideas
In the wall and ceiling trade, as in most industries, relationships drive opportunity. Many of the most successful collaborations and contracts begin with a conversation over coffee at a conference, on the 9th hole of a golf day, or during a dinner at an awards night.
Events give members a neutral, social, and open space to connect with potential partners, clients, and suppliers. They are places to test ideas — to ask “what if,” explore “how could we,” and to find others who might share your vision or challenge your assumptions.
They are also the ideal setting to see what else is happening in the market — what competitors are doing, what products are gaining traction, what technologies are being adopted, and what customers are demanding next.
For business owners, that kind of market intelligence is invaluable. It’s how you stay ahead.

Health, Wellbeing, and the Human Element
Beyond business and learning, events also serve an important human purpose: wellbeing.
Ours is a hard-working industry — long hours, demanding deadlines, and physical work. Events offer a break from the routine, a chance to reconnect socially, to laugh, to unwind, and to remind ourselves that behind every business and every job site, there are people who make it all happen.
A Christmas party, for example, is not just an end-of-year function — it’s an act of community care. It’s a way of saying thank you, celebrating the journey, and refuelling morale for the year ahead.
Golf days, awards nights, and social functions all help create a sense of balance and belonging. They build the camaraderie that strengthens teams and connects generations — from apprentices to veterans.

The 2026 National Events Calendar – A Step Forward
To elevate this experience and give members and partners the opportunity to plan ahead, AWCI Australia has taken a major step forward by developing and launching the 2026 National Events Calendar.
This proactive approach ensures that members, sponsors, and partners can align their schedules, budgets, and business development plans around key association activities. It also demonstrates transparency, foresight, and respect for our members’ time.
The calendar is not just a schedule — it’s a statement of intent. It shows that AWCI Australia is planning, orchestrating, and delivering in a coordinated way across all states and functions.

Highlights of the 2026 national events calendar will include:

  • The AWCI National Conference and Awards Gala – the premier event celebrating industry excellence and innovation.
  • Apprentice Challenge National Finals – showcasing the skills and dedication of Australia’s best young tradespeople.
  • Regional Industry Nights and Trade Showcases – connecting local contractors, suppliers, and manufacturers.
  • Manufacturer Familiarisation Tours – offering exclusive behind-the-scenes access to production facilities.
  • AWCI Golf Days and Networking Mixers – designed to build relationships and foster collaboration in a relaxed setting.
  • Technical and Standards Workshops – ensuring members stay informed on regulatory, compliance, and safety updates.
  • Christmas and End-of-Year Celebrations – recognising achievements, milestones, and community spirit.

This national calendar is a roadmap for connection — giving members and partners confidence that AWCI is committed to delivering consistent, high-value experiences across the country.

Tips to Maximise Your Event Experience
Attending an event is only half the opportunity — the other half lies in how you engage. Here are a few tips to help members make the most of every AWCI event:

  1. Plan Ahead – Review the AWCI events calendar early in the year and mark key dates that align with your goals.
  2. Bring a Team Member or Apprentice – Sharing the experience multiplies the benefit and builds internal capacity.
  3. Engage Actively – Ask questions, introduce yourself, exchange business cards, and participate in discussions.
  4. Follow Up – Send a quick thank-you email or LinkedIn connection after meeting someone new. Relationships grow from follow-up.
  5. Support the Event – If you can, sponsor, exhibit, or contribute. Visibility strengthens your business profile and supports the association.
  6. Be Curious – Visit every exhibitor, try new products, attend the technical sessions — curiosity is where learning begins.
  7. Share the Experience – Post about the event on social media, tag AWCI, and showcase your participation. This helps strengthen the industry’s visibility.
  8. Reflect Afterwards – Ask yourself: What did I learn? Who did I meet? What can I apply? Capture insights while they’re fresh.

By applying these tips, you turn attendance into advantage.

Events as a Platform for Recognition and Legacy
Our industry is built on skill, precision, and pride — qualities that deserve recognition. That’s why the AWCI Awards for Excellence are more than trophies; they are symbols of professionalism and craftsmanship.
For employers, having a team member win or be nominated is a mark of prestige that reinforces quality and reputation. For apprentices, it’s a milestone that can shape their entire career. And for the industry, it’s a moment to celebrate collective progress.
Events like the Awards Night remind us that we belong to something bigger — a profession with standards, achievements, and a shared future.

A Call to Engage
Every AWCI event — big or small — is built on countless hours of planning, coordination, and passion. When members attend, it validates that effort. When sponsors invest, it empowers the next initiative. When volunteers lend their time, it builds legacy.
The success of our industry depends not on any one company or person, but on our willingness to show up for each other — in good times and challenging times alike.
So whether it’s a local branch barbecue, a national conference, or a product tour, your presence matters. Every handshake, every conversation, every shared story strengthens our collective identity.

In Closing – The Energy of the E Word
If “advocacy” is the voice of AWCI and “training” is its engine, then events are its heartbeat. They bring everything and everyone together — people, purpose, and passion — into one living expression of what it means to belong to this industry.
As we look to 2026 and beyond, AWCI Australia is committed to elevating that experience — creating events that inform, inspire, and unite.
We invite every member, partner, and supporter to come along, participate fully, and help us make every gathering an opportunity to celebrate our craft, our community, and our contribution to Australia’s built environment.

See you at the next event.
