The “A” Season – The Awards Season
10th September 2025
By Simon Tengende, CEO – AWCI Australia
Why This Season Matters
Every industry has a rhythm. For some, it’s the start of the financial year, for others, it’s a key trade show, or the release of annual reports. For us at AWCI Australia, there is one season that also stands out as both a celebration and a reminder of who we are and why we exist: The Awards Season.
The “A” season is a time of reflection and recognition. It’s when we pause to look back at what has been achieved in our industry and look forward to the possibilities ahead. It’s a time when contractors, apprentices, suppliers, manufacturers, and partners come together, not just as competitors, but as a community united by a shared craft and a shared purpose.
Awards season is not simply about trophies or gala dinners. It’s about something much deeper – the acknowledgment of skill, perseverance, and vision. It’s about validating the countless hours spent on projects on site, or behind the scenes planning and innovating.
But perhaps most importantly, awards season is about belief. Belief in the industry, belief in the standards we uphold, and belief in each other.
Why Awards Matter
In every part of society – business, trades & crafts, sport, the arts – awards play a vital role. Associations, chambers of commerce, and even sporting bodies have long understood that awards are more than ceremonial. They are strategic tools that shape behaviours, encourage excellence, and unite communities.
1. Encouraging Friendly Competition
Competition is at the heart of improvement. When we compete, we stretch ourselves, innovate, and strive to be better. Awards create a healthy form of competition that drives our industry forward.
In wall and ceiling contracting, this might mean pushing for distinct craftsmanship & workmanship, celebrating unique presentations of the trade, or celebrating the challenge and complexity in delivering a finish. When one company raises the bar, others follow – and the entire industry benefits.
Competition, when structured positively, breeds collaboration. The rival you compete with today may become the partner you collaborate with tomorrow on a larger project or sit with on an Industry issue.
2. Establishing Rules of the Game
Awards help define the standards of excellence in our industry.
When we set criteria for awards – whether it’s quality of workmanship, innovation, safety, or customer service – we’re also setting benchmarks. These benchmarks become the rules of the game, guiding contractors, apprentices, and suppliers in understanding what “good” looks like and what “great” or “elite” truly means.
By rewarding adherence to these rules, we encourage consistency and professionalism across the industry.
3. Recognising Excellence
Recognition is powerful.
In a demanding industry like ours, where so much work happens behind the walls and above the ceilings, it’s easy for exceptional talent to go unnoticed. Awards shine a spotlight on those individuals and teams who go above and beyond.
Recognition has ripple effects:
- It boosts morale for the recipient.
- It inspires others to achieve more.
- It signals to clients and the public that our industry is filled with skilled, passionate professionals.
When we recognize excellence, we create a culture where excellence becomes the norm.
4. Celebrating Projects That Define the Industry
Some projects are more than just jobs; they are landmarks.
An award-winning project often represents:
- Technical mastery.
- Creative problem-solving.
- Collaboration between multiple stakeholders.
These projects set examples for what is possible in our trade. They also become case studies for training and advocacy, demonstrating to regulators, government, and clients the value of engaging skilled, accredited wall and ceiling professionals.
The Individual Choice
While awards celebrate collective achievements, their foundation is built on individual choices.
Every award submission begins with someone making a decision:
- “I believe this project is worthy of recognition.”
- “I’m willing to put in the effort to showcase it.”
- “I want to stand up and say, ‘This matters.’”
This applies to every part of the awards process:
- The contractor who decides to enter a project.
- The apprentice who takes the leap to compete in the Apprentice Challenge.
- The members who vote and show their support.
- The colleagues and families who attend the gala night, filling the room with pride and encouragement.
- The industry leaders who speak and advocate for why these awards matter.
Each of these actions, though small on their own, collectively create the momentum of the Awards Season. Without individual participation, there is no collective celebration.
This is why belief starts with you. Your belief in the value of the industry, in the skill of your peers, and in the importance of recognizing excellence is what makes the Awards meaningful.
Understanding Your Role in the Awards
The Awards Season has many roles, and it is critical that each of us understands what role we choose to play.
Here are the key roles in this ecosystem:
1. Participant
Participants are the lifeblood of the Awards. They are the ones who put forward projects, ideas, and innovations. Without participants willing to showcase their work, the Awards would be empty ceremonies.
When you enter, you’re not just promoting your business – you’re contributing to the industry’s story.
2. Audience
The audience is just as vital. By attending the Awards night, you’re showing support for your peers and reinforcing the value of recognition.
A full room sends a powerful message:
“We see you. We value what you do. We are proud of this industry.”
3. Voter
In categories where voting is part of the process, voters hold a special responsibility. Voting must be done thoughtfully and fairly, with an eye toward excellence, not favouritism.
This is how we maintain integrity and ensure that our Awards reflect true merit. This is why we have decided to call the People’s choice award – The Golden Trowel – it is peer recognition for the best across all categories.
4. Supporter
Supporters amplify the message. They spread the word, encourage participation, and celebrate winners publicly.
Whether through social media, word of mouth, or within your own business, being a supporter strengthens the impact of the Awards.
5. Industry Advocate & AWCI Australia
Advocates use their voice to explain why the Awards matter. They engage with government, clients, and the media to demonstrate that our industry is organized, professional, and committed to excellence. This role is crucial for shaping public perception and influencing policy. As much as AWCI Australia is the host and convene, it also has the responsibility of ensuring the industry understand the awards, their intentions and why they are important so industry can define their role and participate.
Choosing to Play a Positive Role
While there are many ways to contribute positively, there is also a risk: negativity.
Unfortunately, in some industries, awards can become battlegrounds for grudges, criticism, or cynicism. This diminishes their value and harms the collective good.
At AWCI Australia, we are committed to ensuring that our Awards remain positive, constructive, and uplifting.
We ask every member to reflect on their role:
- Are you here to build others up, or to tear them down?
- Are you using the Awards as a platform for unity, or for division?
Negativity has no place in this season. It undermines the hard work of those who have given their best and discourages future participation. As an industry, we face enough external challenges – regulation, market pressures, skills shortages – without creating internal conflict. By choosing positivity, we set a standard for how our industry engages with itself and with the world.
The Broader Impact of Awards
Awards don’t just matter internally; they have a ripple effect beyond our association.
1. With Government and Regulators
Award-winning projects and programs are tangible proof of our industry’s value. They provide case studies for policy discussions, training reforms, and funding proposals.
When we can point to real-world examples of excellence, we strengthen our advocacy.
2. With Clients and Builders
Clients and builders gain confidence when they see a professional body publicly recognizing its best practitioners.
Awards help differentiate members from non-members and highlight the benefits of hiring skilled professionals who are upheld and celebrated by their industry.
3. With the Public
The general public often has limited visibility of our industry’s complexity. Awards provide an accessible way to showcase what we do and why it matters. This builds respect and appreciation for the trade, helping to attract the next generation of apprentices and contractors. Our members ask how we can be respected, this season matters in showcasing what we can do. Have a look at other industry Awards night, Master Builders, HIA, Master Electricians as an example, the pride is obvious in their trade, this is what and who we are too.
The Season of Legacy
Every Awards Season is also about legacy.
We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us – the mentors, the innovators, the leaders who built the foundation of this industry. When we recognize today’s achievers, we’re also honouring the continuum of excellence that stretches across decades.
Legacy is about continuity. It’s about ensuring that the values we celebrate today will be carried forward by future generations. This is why the participation of apprentices and young contractors is so vital. They are not just recipients of training; they are the future custodians of the industry’s story.
Call to Action – Your Part in the A Season
As we approach this year’s AWCI Awards Gala Dinner on Thursday, 16 October 2025 at the Park Hyatt Melbourne, I invite you to consider your role carefully.
Ask yourself:
- Have I entered a project or encouraged someone else to enter?
- Have I secured my seat at the Awards night to show support?
- Have I voted thoughtfully and where applicable?
- Am I using my voice to promote the Awards and their value to our industry?
- Am I contributing positively to the culture of celebration and recognition?
The success of this season depends on each of us making the choice to participate, support, and advocate.
Final Reflection – Why It Matters
The Awards Season is more than a date on the calendar. It is a symbol of our industry’s resilience, creativity, and unity.
When we gather on that October night, we won’t just be celebrating winners. We’ll be celebrating every person who took a risk, entered a project, mentored an apprentice, voted for a peer, or showed up to applaud. We’ll be celebrating belief – belief in the value of what we do and belief in each other. So, as the A Season unfolds, I urge you to choose your role wisely. Choose to be a builder of community, a champion of excellence, and a voice for progress.
Together, let’s make this year’s Awards a defining moment for our association and our industry.
