Mission 1000 – Why Your Voice Matters

20th August 2025
By Simon Tengende, CEO – AWCI Australia

I want to address the why that we all at AWCI Australia have to deal with talking to contractors about coming on board. The why needs to be addressed as something critical to the future of our trade: change, influence, and the power of your voice. At AWCI Australia, we call this effort Mission 1000 – our goal to secure 1,000 active, engaged members across contractors, resellers, and manufacturers. But this is more than just a membership target; it’s a movement, a statement that our trade deserves respect, recognition, and influence at every level.

The Power of Associations

I’ve spent more than two decades working with and in associations in every sector you can imagine – electricians, plumbers, builders, painters, architects, and business bodies. And one thing has become abundantly clear: unified voices create influence. Associations that thrive, that set standards, that shape policy, do so because their members understand the value of standing together and do.

Think about it. When electricians mobilize their members, when builders or unions like the CFMEU call on their people, it’s not just a show of numbers – it’s a demonstration of power, credibility, and respect. They don’t just attend meetings; they command a seat at the table where decisions are made about regulations, licensing, standards, and industry futures. Their voices are not ignored – they are listened to and acted upon.

For wall and ceiling contractors, this has not always been the case. Historically, our trade has had to negotiate from the sidelines – trying to make our standards understood, trying to ensure our work is recognized, constantly advocating to builders, regulators, and suppliers for fair treatment.

Why Change Is Needed

This is why AWCI Australia was created – to give our trade a national platform, a unified voice, and real influence. But a platform alone is not enough. For it to be effective, it must be backed by numbers, engagement, and commitment. This is where you come in.

Mission 1000 is not just about reaching a number. It is about building a critical mass of professionals who can actively influence the future of the wall and ceiling industry. When contractors, resellers, and manufacturers join AWCI Australia, they are not just paying a fee – they are lending their voice, their experience, and their authority to a movement that will define the next decade of our trade.

I’ve heard contractors ask, “Why should I join? I’m already a member of HIA or Master Builders.” That’s fair. But consider this: I was recently invited to the Master Builders Awards. It was a fantastic event, well organized, and full of celebration for builders. Yet, as a wall and ceiling contractor or representative, you couldn’t help but notice something – we were guests in someone else’s story. Their awards, their conversations, their priorities dominated the room.

AWCI Australia is different. This is our stage, our conversation, our story. Here, the focus is on plastering, linings, all things walls and ceilings – all aspects of our trade. This is where your profession gets its due recognition. This is where you help shape the rules and standards, not just comply with them.

Membership Means Influence

Being a member of AWCI Australia is about more than access to benefits – it’s about taking part in shaping the industry. It’s about contributing to initiatives that improve standards, drive licensing reforms, and increase recognition for our trade across all states.

Here’s what membership allows you to do:

  • Shape the Industry: Participate in State Advisory Committees, technical groups, and national policy initiatives. Your experience directly contributes to changes that benefit everyone.
  • Advocate for Licensing and Recognition: Help us build on our licensing framework that works for wall and ceiling contractors in all states, whether through a formal registry, license, a “Blue Card” style system, or other recognition mechanisms.
  • Celebrate Excellence: Attend the AWCI Australia events such as the Awards and celebrate the best projects, skills, and innovation in our trade-take pride in what our trade contributes not only to industry but to the Australian economy and way of life. This year, the Awards in Melbourne on 16th October will be the first national event replacing the state awards – a true milestone for our industry.
  • Access Networking and Collaboration: Connect with other contractors, resellers, and manufacturers across Australia in your state or at national plartforms. Build relationships that strengthen your business and elevate the trade.
  • Enjoy Tangible Benefits: Discounts on training & professional development, technical resources, merchandise, and exclusive offers.

But while these benefits are real, the first and most important driver is the opportunity to be part of the change. Your membership and active engagement ensure that the industry speaks with one voice, and that voice commands attention where it matters – government, regulators, standards bodies, and major industry stakeholders.

Change Happens When Members Engage

Advocacy is at the core of AWCI Australia’s mission. Right now, our focus is on progressing our licensing framework in all states. This is not hypothetical – it’s happening, and our members are leading it through the Board and State Advisory Committees. The work being done is shaping the future: ensuring that plasterers, linings specialists, and installers have professional recognition, that standards are clear and enforceable, and that contractors are respected and remunerated fairly.

Members who participate in these initiatives do more than talk; they drive change. They bring practical insight, real-world experience, and credibility to discussions about regulation, safety, and standards. Every conversation, every meeting, every consultation is strengthened when your voice joins the chorus.

Imagine the impact if 1,000 contractors, resellers, and manufacturers were actively involved. That is Mission 1000 – a national movement that cannot be ignored. When the numbers are significant, our industry gains bargaining power, respect, and authority. Decisions that once excluded wall and ceiling contractors will now require our input. Rules that once ignored our trade will now consider our standards. Opportunities that once passed us by will now be shaped with us at the table.

Your Voice Is the Change

Change is not passive. It requires action. It requires engagement. It requires members who are willing to stand up, speak out, and share their experience. Every contractor who joins AWCI Australia is a change-maker. Every reseller and manufacturer who participates strengthens the credibility and reach of our movement.

Membership alone is not enough – it’s active participation that makes the difference. Attending events, joining committees, sharing insights, and contributing to discussions ensures that your expertise helps guide licensing frameworks, standards, and industry recognition.

Why 1000 Members Matters

The number is symbolic but strategic. With 1,000 active members, AWCI Australia will:

  • Demonstrate strength and unity to regulators and policymakers.
  • Gain a louder, unified voice when advocating for standards and licensing.
  • Build national credibility in negotiations with builders, suppliers, and regulators.
  • Create critical mass for marketing, advocacy campaigns, and industry-wide initiatives.

To put it simply, numbers equal influence. The more members we have, the more attention our trade commands. And that is the foundation for sustainable change.

Celebrating Our Trade

We are not just about advocacy. We are also about recognition and celebration. The AWCI Australia Awards are a platform to showcase the best of our trade – from residential projects to commercial excellence, from decorative linings to heritage restoration. These awards are your opportunity to celebrate skill, dedication, and innovation. And more importantly, they highlight the importance of our trade to the wider construction industry.

This year’s Awards will be the first national event, replacing state awards and moving on a bi-annual rotation across various states. Each State Advisory Committee will host, creating an opportunity for all members to be involved, to connect, and to take pride in their profession. This is a milestone for AWCI Australia and for every member who has supported the nationalization of our association.

A Call to Arms

I want to be clear: this is not just a membership drive. This is a call to arms for every contractor, reseller, and manufacturer who believes in the future of our trade. The decisions we make today, the voices we lend, and the actions we take will define the next decade of wall and ceiling contracting.

We need your expertise, your experience, and your commitment. We need members who are willing to stand up and be heard. The work is challenging, but the rewards – influence, recognition, and control over our trade’s future – are worth it.

Mission 1000 is within reach. But it will only be achieved if every member recognizes the power of their voice and their membership. We have laid the foundation. The national association exists. The committees are active. The awards are set. Now, it’s time for all of us to step up and be part of the change.

Join us. Lend your voice. Shape the future. Be a change-maker.

Together, we can ensure that wall and ceiling contractors are respected, recognized, and represented – on site, in the industry, and at every table where decisions are made.
