AWCI Membership Advantage: Make It Work for You

15th July 2025
By By Simon Tengende, CEO – AWCI Australia

When you become a member of an association like AWCI Australia, you’re not just signing up for benefits – you’re joining a movement. You’re becoming part of a powerful, national voice that is working every day to strengthen, protect, and grow the wall and ceiling industry across Australia.

At a time when regulatory reform, workforce shortages, and shifting market expectations are creating both challenges and opportunities for our trade, the importance of having a strong industry body has never been clearer.

What Is an Industry Association and Why Does It Matter?

An association exists to serve its members. But more importantly, it exists to lead, represent, and shape the future of the trade. Associations like AWCI Australia exist to ensure that trades like ours are not left behind in a rapidly evolving construction landscape. Our purpose is simple but powerful:

  • Advocate for your interests in front of governments and regulators.
  • Develop the industry through training, recognition, and professional development.
  • Connect you to peers, experts, and commercial opportunities.
  • Support your business with practical tools and services.

We are the national voice for the wall and ceiling industry. And we exist because our members believe that our trade deserves to be represented, respected, and resourced at the highest levels.

The Pillars of Value

AWCI Australia delivers value through three interconnected pillars:

1. Policy & Advocacy

We work with governments and regulators at state and national levels to shape policy, drive reform, and ensure that plasterers, contractors, and specialists are not only heard – but prioritised. From licensing and regulation to standards and safety, we ensure that AWCI members have a seat at the table.

But advocacy only works when members are informed and involved. That means reading our updates, attending our forums, responding to surveys, and participating in submissions. If you want to speak with authority about the issues facing our industry, we give you the tools to do so.

2. Business Solutions & Member Services

From fuel cards and business coaching to tendering resources and insurance discounts, AWCI membership comes with a range of tangible benefits that can improve your bottom line. We also offer resources to support compliance, quoting, and business growth.

These services are designed to make life easier and business more profitable – but you only benefit if you explore what’s available. Check out our member portal. Give us a call. Ask what’s new.

3. Industry Development & Training

Our trade is only as strong as our people. That’s why we invest in developing apprentices, upskilling workers, and supporting lifelong learning. From CPD webinars to intensive training modules and site-based guidance, we’re committed to raising the standard.

Through our partnership with RTOs and training providers, we also play a leading role in shaping how skills are taught, assessed, and recognised. Our upcoming Blue Card Program will help formalise pathways for experienced workers to gain nationally recognised qualifications.

Signature Programs Driving Industry Impact

AWCI Australia delivers a number of flagship initiatives designed to recognise excellence, develop talent, and bring our community together.

AWCI Awards of Excellence

This national competition celebrates the highest standards in wall and ceiling contracting, heritage restoration, decorative finishes, commercial fit outs, and more. It is a chance to show what our trade is capable of at its best.

Held annually form 2025, with winners announced at the National awards and National Conference in alternate years, the Awards provide professional recognition and promote pride in our trade. Winners showcase excellence in workmanship and innovation.

🏆 AWCI Apprentice Challenge

Our regional and state-based Apprentice Challenges are designed to support the next generation of talent. These hands-on competitions test technical skills, speed, and accuracy – and more importantly, build confidence, peer networks, and professional pride.

Winners from each state go on to represent their state at the National Apprentice Challenge, held as part of the AWCI Conference biannually. Participation often opens doors to job opportunities, mentorship, and even future business ownership.

⛳️ State-Based Events

Events like our Golf Days, networking lunches, and state industry nights offer members a chance to connect, unwind, and build relationships. These events are more than social gatherings – they’re an opportunity to strengthen our professional community, share knowledge, and open doors to future work.

We also run information sessions on compliance, standards, and system changes – keeping members ahead of the curve.

Making the Most of Your Membership

Being a member is not a passive experience. You only get out what you put in.

Here are a few ways to unlock the full advantage of your AWCI membership:

  • Join advocacy activities – attend forums, share your input, and shape submissions.
  • Use business services – from discount cards to free webinars, every benefit is a saving or learning opportunity.
  • Attend events – state gatherings, national awards, site tours, and technical briefings.
  • Invest in your skills – participate in training, CPD, and the upcoming Blue Card Program.
  • Get in touch – call or email the team to find out what’s available and how to get involved.

Don’t Be Fooled by Other Associations

There are other associations out there that may appear helpful – and you may even be a member of one. But here’s what you need to remember:

They serve their industry – not ours.

For example, Master Builders Australia does excellent work – for builders. As a subcontractor, you might access some services, but you are not their priority. Likewise, electrical associations serve electricians first. You may get a contracting tool here or there, but the core of their advocacy, resources, and development is not focused on plasterers, setters, or fixers.

AWCI Australia is your association. Whether you’re 100% happy with where we are or want to see us grow, this is the place to engage. The more members invest their time, insights, and support into the association, the stronger we become.

If you want AWCI Australia to be like the other associations you hear about – with influence, scale, and reach – the time to get involved is now.

Closing Message: Let’s Build Together

AWCI Australia is not just a logo or a head office – it’s a national network of committed professionals who believe our trade matters. If you're facing a challenge, have an idea, or see a gap in the market – tell us. Your insight could lead to the next advocacy campaign, training initiative, or member resource.

We are your trade partner and your biggest advocate.

Let’s keep raising the standard, growing the trade, and building a stronger industry – together.
