December 2025 - President's Last Word
16th December 2024

The Last Word from Perry Richardson
President, AWCI Australia
As 2024 comes to a close and the much-anticipated, well-deserved Christmas break approaches, it’s the perfect time to reflect on an incredible year of transformation and progress for AWCI. In particular, the journey of AWCI Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, and Western Australia becoming part of AWCI Australia Ltd. Thank you to all the members from these states who voted for a stronger and united Industry-Well Done!
This monumental shift was not just an administrative change; it was a statement about the future of our industry. Over the past 12 months, we’ve had countless communications with members, state meetings, and even a road trip by our former CEO, Rob Lucas, to personally connect with members in every state. These engagements were essential in building understanding and support for the unification and highlighting the benefits of becoming one cohesive national organisation, rather than six independent states.
Now, let me address Rob’s departure and his legacy.
Speaking personally, I underestimated the magnitude of effort, emotion, and sheer determination it would take to get us here. From day one, I’ve believed this was the only viable path forward for the ultimate survival and success of AWCI. Rob’s leadership and vision were instrumental in driving this change. His decision to retire was unexpected, but his legacy is undeniable. Rob left AWCI in a far better position than when he joined, and his departure was marked with mutual respect. His efforts laid the groundwork for everything we’ve achieved, and he even helped recruit his successor in record time.
Which brings me to our new CEO, Simon Tengende.
Simon’s selection was unanimous. With his wealth of experience, particularly from his time at NECA ( National Electrical & Communications association) and Master Electricians Austyralia, Simon brings deep insight into the transformative potential of a national organisation. His enthusiasm and strategic approach have been evident from day one. In just six weeks, he and the AWCI team delivered a highly successful 76th National Conference—a testament to his capability and commitment. Simon has already begun steering AWCI Australia Ltd into its next chapter with vision and purpose, and I’m confident we are in excellent hands.
The formation of AWCI Australia Ltd represents a pivotal moment for our industry. A singular focus and national direction allow us to maximise human and financial resources to deliver better services, impactful advocacy, and advanced training for members. By streamlining processes and speaking with one voice, we now have the power to elevate and promote our industry in ways previously unimaginable.
This is not to say state voices will be lost. State Advisory Committees are being established to ensure local input remains central to shaping our vision and delivering meaningful outcomes. These committees will be vital in keeping members engaged and driving the changes needed for a stronger, more unified AWCI. For NSW, the only State whose members have not expressed their vote to join the National Body, an invitation for an observer to the national board will be extended. All contractor & suppliers in all states are welcome to join the national membership.
As we look to 2025, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all members for their unwavering support and belief in this vision. While challenges lie ahead, the opportunities are even greater. The changes we’re making will not only deliver benefits to our current members but also attract new ones, ensuring we are forward-focused and future-ready.
Remember, this is our industry, our association, and our collective responsibility. Together, we can create lasting change and ensure AWCI stands stronger than ever.
From entire AWCI Australia Board, National staff and myself, I wish you, your teams, and your families a joyful and restful holiday season. Let’s recharge and return in 2025 ready to build an even brighter future for AWCI.
Warm regards,
Perry Richardson
