Message from Simon Tengende, CEO of AWCI Australia

Simon headshot round frame    Dear Members & Colleagues,

I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey we’ve embarked on as we work toward a unified, national model for AWCI Australia. Over the past month, I've hit the ground running, engaging with members and partners across     the country. From my visit to WA engaging with the WA Executives, and familiarising with the impressive Etex factory, to connecting with the executives in SA, TAS, and NSW, I continue to gather invaluable insights.

Each conversation reinforces a recurring theme — questions around the advantages of forming a national model, and how we can elevate the respect for our industry.

The answer is simple: for our industry to gain the respect it deserves; we must first respect it ourselves. And that begins with backing our national association. By nationalising, we are stepping into a new era of leadership that can both address our current challenges and lay the foundation for a brighter future.

Drawing from my experience with Master Electricians Australia and the Australian Institute of Architects—both national bodies—I've seen firsthand the benefits a unified association brings. For those still wondering why a national model is essential, here’s a brief rundown of the Big 9 Competitive Advantages:

  1. One unified voice for advocacy: Stronger representation in government and stakeholder negotiations.
  2. Superior member services everywhere: Consistent, high-quality services accessible to all members.
  3. Cost efficiency and reduced duplication: Eliminating redundant processes to reinvest in member services.
  4. Preserving local identity: Local representation through Advisory Committees will remain to ensure regional needs are represented and conveyed to the national body.
  5. Streamlined sponsorship opportunities: Simpler sponsorship processes, benefiting all members.
  6. Stronger marketing and promotion: National campaigns will raise the industry’s profile.
  7. National learning and innovation sharing: States can collaborate and innovate for the benefit of all.
  8. Financial safeguards across regional investment: an integrated national budget ensures strategic investments in all regions.
  9. Long-term stability and growth: A solid foundation for sustainable growth in a unified industry.

As we are finalising the national benefits package for both members and corporate partners, we are diligently engaging to secure favourable transitions for all involved. We’ll continue to engage with members and partners, ensuring the benefits are well understood. I welcome anyone who wants to reach out for a chat as your insights are invaluable to us.

I’m also excited to continue working with the dedicated AWCI Australia team, who will soon transition into national roles to serve our growing membership. Their energy and commitment are key as we build this stronger, unified association.

October also marked National Safe Work Month—a time to reflect on the importance of a safety-first culture in your business. Let’s keep safety at the forefront as we move forward.

Thank you for your continued support as we take these critical steps to strengthen our industry.

Warm regards,
Simon Tengende
